LIFE and Times: Floating Cars and Magic Plastics
The final Packard-centered collection discovered by PPG volunteer Richard Mayer shows one for the record books. He stated that among other things, this collection depicts a demonstration “performed to show the strength of a Mylar plastic sheeting material.” And boy, does it ever!
LIFE photographer Andreas Feininger shot his delightfully bizarre selection of photographs in 1954. Feininger spent his early life in Europe, but his photographic career exploded upon his immigration to New York. He took many of his most famous images in the state and its nominal city.
In addition to supporting several full-grown men, the Mylar sheet was able to lift and support a Packard Clipper Super! No cars or Mylar sheets were harmed during the performance.
